About Us

Proud to be locally owned and operated since 1984.

Our Story

Classic Foods has been providing hotels, restaurants and other commercial business in the Pacific Northwest with artisan specialty products since 1984.  Jake Greenberg, our founder, started with a line of premium, low salt soup bases but quickly expanded the product line to include herbs, spices and specialty items.  In 1991, Classic Foods began producing its own pasta.

In February of 2011, we moved into our newly renovated headquarters in Portland’s Woodlawn neighborhood.  The art deco building was built in 1932.  It was originally an icehouse and during the historic 1948 Vanport flood, it housed the Army Corp of Engineers.  Before being purchased by Classic Foods, it was a paper box manufacturing company.

Today, the outside of the building has been restored and landscaped.  Inside, we reused as many of the original walls and beams as possible and have created a bright and open office area and gallery that allows visitors to watch our pasta machines at work.  Our building meets the certification goals of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

In the Community

Classic Foods is dedicating to supporting our local community and non-profits.

For thirty years, the Oregon Humane Society’s Doggie Dash has raised money to fight animal abuse, help injured animals, and find good home for needy pets. After the run, participants are treated to a pancake breakfast supplied by Classic Foods.

Our House provides support and services to low-income people living with HIV. Their Dinner at My House for Our House helps fund their programs and each year, Jake Greenberg, the founder of Classic Foods, presents diners with the unique experience of a classic Italian dinner served in the gallery outside our pasta kitchen.

Classic Foods is one of 280 partners that donate to Birch Community Services. The surplus supplies we donate are re-distributed to needy families throughout the Portland Area.

Celebrating our Northwest products, Nicky USA’s annual Wild About Game festival invites chefs from Portland and Seattle to participate in a game cooking competition. Classic Foods donates $100 gift certificates to all the participating chefs.

I’m Hooked partners with conservation organizations and government agencies to educate children in the “art and science of fishing.” Their free fishing weekend at Henry Haag Lake is attended by lots of kids and their families. After a morning of fishing fun, participants are ready for a hearty lunch and Classic Foods supplies the macaroni salad!
